Writing on Purpose

I started writing The Shape Inside over twenty years ago. The story started as a short-story assignment for a creative writing class in college. Back then, it was known as The Shape of Shadows.

It wasn’t the full speculative horror it is today. Early drafts continued to center on small-town secrets and a murder mystery. But it evolved into the shape it always was destined to be. It’s been a long journey; one a reader will never know about.

I’m glad for the journey. Without it, so much would have been lost, and I wouldn’t have learned as much as I have about the writing process. I didn’t intend for this journal entry to be overly preachy, but for what it’s worth: write with purpose and don’t give up on a story because it could be an amazing journey, one I hope every writer gets to experience.

Go on. Write now.
